- A classic shepherd's pie recipe:
Ingredients:
- 1 1/2 pounds ground beef (or lamb)
- 1 onion, chopped
- 2 carrots, diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 cup frozen peas
- 2 tablespoons tomato paste
- 1 cup beef broth
- 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon dried thyme
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- 4 cups mashed potatoes
- 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional)
Instructions:
1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
2. In a large skillet or frying pan, cook the ground beef (or lamb) over medium heat until browned. Remove any excess fat from the pan.
3. Add the chopped onion, diced carrots, and minced garlic to the pan. Cook for about 5 minutes until the vegetables start to soften.
4. Stir in the frozen peas, tomato paste, beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, dried thyme, salt, and pepper. Simmer the mixture for about 10 minutes, allowing the flavors to blend. If the mixture seems too dry, you can add a little more beef broth.
5. Transfer the meat and vegetable mixture to a baking dish or casserole dish, spreading it out evenly.
6. Spread the mashed potatoes over the top of the meat and vegetable mixture, creating an even layer. You can use a fork to create a pattern or texture on the mashed potatoes if desired.
7. If you like, sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese over the top of the mashed potatoes.
8. Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for about 20-25 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the filling is bubbling.
9. Remove from the oven and let it cool slightly before serving. Shepherd's pie is traditionally served hot.
Enjoy your classic shepherd's pie.
Note: Shepherd's pie can be customized with additional ingredients such as mushrooms, corn, or herbs, according to personal preference.
